Menu Planning Basics: Shopping

The key to keeping costs low when menu planning is to shop the sales.  Pull out your weekly sales fliers (you can look these up online too if you do not get them in the mail) to see what is on sale when planning your menu.  Or, you can simply look up our store coupon match ups for your store!

If pork loin and chicken are on sale this week, you can have pork chops, bbq pork, chicken spaghetti, and lemon peppered chicken this week.    If ground beef is on sale, try having hamburgers, enchiladas, or manicotti.

By purchasing sales items to include in your menu plan you will lower your grocery bill.   If you purchase pork loin on sale for $1.97/lb rather than it’s regular price of $3.47 per pound it will save you a lot of money.    That is a difference of a $1.50 per pound which means that when you purchase 5 lbs of pork loin you will save approximately $7.50 for that one item!

Once you see what you have on hand at home and what it on sale at the store, you can begin to find recipes to use with those items.  For instance, if you have a lot of spaghetti sauce at home and noodles are on sale at the store, have spaghetti that week.  Or you can use the spaghetti sauce in place of pizza sauce (we love the added spices on our pizza!) on your weekly pizza night.

The options really are endless!   Have fun with it and make a menu plan that fits your family.  No two families are a like, we all have different tastes and needs, so make sure to plan according to your families needs.
